Best Coffee

The complete Minneapolis coffee guide

Minneapolis has quietly become one of America's best coffee cities. Third-wave roasters, experimental drink menus, and baristas who genuinely care about their craft. Here are the spots worth seeking out.

Spyhouse Coffee

Multiple locations — NE, Whittier, Uptown, North Loop

The standard-bearer of Twin Cities specialty coffee since 2000. They roast in-house, source directly from farms, and train baristas like sommeliers. The pour-over menu changes seasonally. Each location has its own personality — NE is the most atmospheric, North Loop is the least crowded.

Order tip: Single-origin pour-over — ask the barista what they're excited about. You'll get a mini coffee education with your cup.

Five Watt Coffee

E. Hennepin (NE), Kingfield, Keg & Case

The cocktail-inspired coffee shop. They use bitters, savory spices, and unexpected ingredients in their espresso drinks. Not flashy — just genuinely inventive craft. The E. Hennepin NE location has funky old decor and a laid-back neighborhood energy.

Order tip: The Kingfield — espresso, milk, vanilla, coriander bitters, and black Hawaiian sea salt. Sounds weird, tastes perfect.

Dogwood Coffee

1209 Tyler St NE / 4021 East Lake St

Small-batch roaster working directly with top coffee farmers worldwide. Colorful, modern interiors that feel spacious and welcoming. Their cold brew served in a beer goblet is a local icon.

Order tip: Zamboni cold brew. Also great beans to take home.

Matchbox Coffee — Northeast

768 Johnson St NE

Tiny, worker-owned gem. It's called Matchbox because it really is that small — NYC small. But the cold press is widely considered the best in the city, and the locally-baked treats are excellent. String lights, cozy tables, baristas who genuinely love this.

Order tip: Cold press, full stop. Come for the coffee, stay for the warmth.

Misfit Coffee — Northeast

630 NE 1st St

Lives up to its name. Far-out rotating specialty drinks — banana cold brew with oat milk, smoked vanilla peach lattes — and an anything-goes creative energy. A perpetual adventure.

Order tip: Whatever the seasonal special is. Don't play it safe here.

Momo Cafe — Central Ave NE

3035 Central Ave NE

Serene space decorated with the owner's Tibetan art collection. Specialty drinks feature Asian flavors like sesame, ube, and corn milk. Completely unique in the city — nothing else feels like this.

Order tip: Corn milk latte. You'll think about it for days.

Penny's Coffee — Northeast

NE Minneapolis

Started as a neighborhood spot in a converted garage in 2016. Tiny batches (60 pounds at a time), rotating single-origin offerings every few weeks. Personal, focused, Instagram-worthy but not trying to be.

Order tip: Matcha latte or whatever single-origin they're running this week.

Northern Coffeeworks — Near Lake Nokomis

4316 Upton Ave S

Inspired by Minnesota's outdoor lifestyle. All coffee roasted in-house, named after classic Minnesota vibes — Boundary Waters, Cabin Vibes, Evergreen. Sustainably sourced, small-batch, and genuinely connected to the local community.

Order tip: Cold press with cardamom syrup. Refreshing and bold.

Craft Beer

Northeast Minneapolis is America's best brewery neighborhood

You could spend a week exploring NE Minneapolis breweries alone. Most are within walking or biking distance of each other — and of our apartments. Here's the essential list.

Indeed Brewing Company

711 NE 15th Ave

One of the anchors of NE's brewery scene. Large taproom, rotating food trucks, and a strong year-round lineup. The patio is a neighborhood institution in summer. Consistently excellent across styles.

Try: Day Tripper Pale Ale — the local classic. Grab a crowler to go.

Bauhaus Brew Labs

1315 Tyler St NE

Part brewery, part cultural venue. Retro-futuristic branding, Bingo nights, live music, and a beer garden that feels like a neighborhood block party. One of the most fun taproom experiences in the country.

Try: Wonderstuff Kölsch for something easy, Sky-Five IPA for something bold.

Fair State Brewing Cooperative

2506 Central Ave NE

America's first cooperatively-owned brewery. Serious about their craft — lagers and sours are consistently excellent. Intimate taproom with a community-first energy.

Try: FHEW cream ale. Also their Mirror Universe mixed-culture sour series.

Surly Brewing Company

520 Malcolm Ave SE

The brewery that changed Minnesota beer laws. Massive destination brewery with a beer hall, restaurant, pizza oven, and outdoor beer garden. The Furious IPA is iconic.

Try: Furious IPA or Darkness (if it's in season). Tour the brewery if you can.

Dangerous Man Brewing

1300 NE 2nd St

Hyper-local, small-batch, community-focused. No bottling or distribution — you can only get it here. Every batch is different, every visit is a discovery. The chocolate milk stout is legendary.

Try: Whatever's on the board. It's always limited and always good.

Tattersall Distilling

1620 Central Ave NE

Not a brewery — a craft distillery with a cocktail room. Award-winning spirits, creative cocktails, and a beautiful space. Perfect when you want something beyond beer.

Try: Ask the bartender to surprise you based on your spirit preference.

Food & Dining

Eat Street, NE favorites, and everything in between

Nicollet Avenue between 26th and Lake Street is known as Eat Street — one of the most diverse restaurant corridors in the Midwest. Within a few blocks: Vietnamese, Ethiopian, Mexican, Somali, Thai, and everything in between. But great food stretches across the whole city.

Quang Restaurant

2719 Nicollet Ave (Eat Street)

Vietnamese institution. The pho is legendary — consistently ranked among the best in the Midwest. Spring rolls, banh mi, generous portions, cash-friendly prices. No pretense, just excellent food.

Go-to: Pho Dac Biet (combination pho). Come hungry.

Revival

4257 Nicollet Ave

James Beard-nominated Southern cooking with a Minnesota soul. The fried chicken is what people drive across the city for. Rotating seasonal sides, killer brunch cocktails, and a vibe that's always buzzing.

Go-to: Half bird fried chicken dinner. You'll understand the hype.

Hola Arepa

3501 Nicollet Ave (Eat Street)

Venezuelan-inspired arepas with creative fillings, served in a warm, casual space. Great patio in summer. The kind of neighborhood gem every city wishes it had.

Go-to: La Catira arepa — chicken, gouda, and garlic sauce.

Young Joni

165 13th Ave NE

One of the best restaurants in Minneapolis, period. Wood-fired pizzas, creative small plates, and a back bar speakeasy that serves excellent cocktails. NE Minneapolis fine dining without the stuffiness.

Go-to: Any wood-fired pizza. Ask to sit in the back bar if it's available.

Hai Hai

2121 University Ave NE

Southeast Asian street food in a lively, colorful NE space. Vietnamese-inspired cocktails, shareable plates, and a patio that rivals any in the city. Sister restaurant to the same team behind Hola Arepa.

Go-to: Coconut Shrimp Curry. The drinks are just as good as the food.

Hell's Kitchen

80 S 9th St (Downtown)

Minneapolis breakfast institution. Famous for bison sausage, lemon ricotta hotcakes, and peanut butter made in-house. Expect a wait on weekends — it's worth it.

Go-to: Lemon ricotta hotcakes with lingonberry butter.

Things To Do

Explore the city

Stone Arch Bridge & Mill City Museum

Walk across the iconic Stone Arch Bridge for panoramic views of St. Anthony Falls and the Minneapolis skyline. The Mill City Museum next door tells the story of the city's flour milling history inside the ruins of a 19th-century mill. Both are within easy reach of our NE properties.

Best time: Sunset walks on the bridge. Bring your camera.

Minneapolis Sculpture Garden & Walker Art Center

Home to the iconic Spoonbridge and Cherry sculpture. 11 acres of outdoor art, free to explore year-round. Connected to the Walker Art Center — one of the country's top contemporary art museums.

Free garden admission always. Walker has free Thursday evenings.

Mississippi Riverfront Trails

Miles of paved trails along the river, perfect for running, biking, or strolling. The NE section near our properties connects to Boom Island Park and heads all the way to Minnehaha Falls (about 8 miles).

Rent a Nice Ride bike and ride the full trail. Stop at Sea Salt at Minnehaha Falls for fish tacos.

Northeast Arts District

Galleries, studios, murals, and creative spaces throughout the neighborhood. The annual Art-A-Whirl event (every May) is the largest open studio tour in the country, but you can explore galleries any time.

Start on 13th Avenue NE and wander. You'll find something unexpected.

Chain of Lakes

Lake Harriet, Lake Calhoun (Bde Maka Ska), and Lake of the Isles — connected by a scenic parkway and bike trail. Swimming beaches in summer, cross-country skiing in winter. This is what makes Minneapolis one of America's most livable cities.

Rent a kayak or paddleboard from Wheel Fun Rentals at Bde Maka Ska.

Seasonal Tips

What to know, season by season

Spring (Apr–May)

The city comes alive. Patios open, Art-A-Whirl happens in May, and the trails along the river are perfect. Pack layers — mornings can be cool. Highs range from 50–70°F.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Peak season. Outdoor dining everywhere, lake days, music festivals, and long daylight hours (sunset after 9pm). Highs around 80–90°F. Book popular restaurants in advance.

Fall (Sep–Nov)

The trees along the river turn spectacular. Brewery taprooms shift to seasonal stouts and Oktoberfest lagers. Great hiking weather. Highs from 40–65°F. Bring a good jacket.

Winter (Dec–Mar)

Cold, but the city doesn't stop. Indoor breweries stay packed, coffee shops become second homes, and the skyway system downtown lets you walk miles without going outside. Highs from 10–30°F. Dress in layers and bring real winter boots.
